How do you livestream video with a mobile device?

stream live TV over InternetWith all of the online video choices at our disposal, we still haven’t reached the promised land of being able to watch live television anywhere on any device. Nonetheless, the situation is improving, and streaming live TV programming to your computer or mobile device is no longer a pipe dream.
Whether you’ve cut the cable cord or simply want to stream live TV on the go, your options have improved. You shouldn’t expect to access every channel you’d get at home — at least not for free — but it’s easier than ever to watch live TV streams of news, sports, and entertainment.

STREAM LIVE TV NEWS

News programming represents your best option to watch live TV online for free. CNN Live and ABC News Livestream coverage of breaking news and live events, such as President Obama’s Inauguration, congressional hearings, White House briefings, and the upcoming State of the Union address scheduled for February 12, 2013. CBS News and the PBS NewsHour provide similar coverage through their Ustream.tv channels (PBS also offers live streaming simulcasts of its NewsHour program). Additionally, C-SPAN Live delivers its full schedule of House and Senate hearings, as well as its Book TV program.
For international news, Al Jazeera English delivers a streaming simulcast of its TV news channel, while those who like to keep track of business news can turn to Bloomberg TV’s live stream online.
RealPlayer can help you stay on top of all the latest news. Just check out the Web Channels feature to see the latest videos from the Associated Press, Reuters, and more delivered right to your computer.

STREAM LIVE TV SPORTS

Missing out on live sports is often a deal breaker for those considering cutting the cord, but that no longer has to be the case. Provided that ESPN is part of your cable package, WatchESPN offers free access to featured games in all major professional and college sports, includinglive international soccer streams. If the network isn’t included in your cable subscription, you can still stream live programming from the ESPN3 channel for free. You can access WatchESPN to watch live sports online via your web browser or mobile device. One caveat: some streaming events are subject to blackouts in certain areas.
The major sports leagues — Major League Baseball, the National Football League, the National Basketball Association, and the National Hockey League — all offer subscription options for streaming live games to your computer, mobile device, or even your HDTV through a set-top device such as Roku or Apple TV. You also get extra features like DVR functionality, home and away broadcasts, in-game highlights, and multigame views.

HOW TO WATCH LIVE TV ON THE INTERNET

Streaming all live TV programming is a bit trickier — and costlier. A “place shifting” device like the SlingBox, which connects to your home video source (such as a DVR or cable set-top box) and transmits the signal over the Internet to your computer or mobile device, lets you watch all the channels you get at home from any location.
Aereo charges customers a monthly fee to watch over-the-air broadcast channels on a web browser, iPhone, or iPad via a small HD antenna that you access from the Internet. You can also record up to two shows at once and access DVR functionality while streaming live TV. This service is currently only available in New York City.
Cable providers also offer their subscribers the ability to watch live programming on mobile devices, albeit with strings attached. Comcast customers can use its Xfinity AnyPlay service to watch live TV on an Apple or Android mobile device. The company charges $10 a month for the AnyPlay kit. But you’re limited to using your home Wi-Fi network to watch most of the channels included in your subscription. When you’re away from home, you only have access to Comcast’s On Demand content. Although you can register up to 10 different devices, Comcast only lets you view content on one device at a time. Time Warner Cable’s TWC TV app offers similar features, though without the monthly subscription.
One option that’s free even if you don’t have a cable subscription: the Home Shopping Network live streams its never-ending parade of product offers on its website and mobile apps.

BlackBerry 10 OS announced, multi-tasking and gesture-based UI take centre stage

Vatsal Shah 13:38 , 2 Feb. 2013
BlackBerry announced its brand new BlackBerry 10 OS at a slick launch event in New York. BB10, which is a big departure from the company’s past attempts at touchscreen OS, will be available with the new handsets that were also announced at the event.

The new OS will be available on the new devices Z10 and Q10, but the big news is that the
BlackBerry Playbook will also see an update to BB10 in the near future. The tablet should play nicely with the new OS.

It was a great moment at the event when BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins said, “Two years ago we had to make a very serious decision: adopt someone else’s platform or build a whole new one from the ground up. We made the decision to go it alone.” And one of the decisions that BlackBerry made was to make the device multitasking friendly and put it at the forefront of the device rather than have widgets or just apps. This panel will also be used to switch between apps and this is the main panel on your BlackBerry 10 phone. Enter BlackBerry Flow. Essentially, it is the multitasking panel from which you can access all open apps and switch between them with just a couple of actions. The panel is accessed by swiping up from the bottom of the phone.

BlackBerry Hub is a collection of all notifications you receive, but it’s more than just a plain unified inbox. At the event, Heins said, “It’s like a universal inbox on steroids.” Everything from email to text messages to BBM and GTalk pings will be seen here, but you can also see your contacts from within the Hub and also reply directly to tweets and post status messages from here.
A neat feature is the easy access gesture, called BlackBerry Peek, that lets you take a gander at the pending notifications or the status of your inbox. All you have to do is swipe up from the bottom of the screen and take a 90-degree turn to the right.

BlackBerry has laid plenty of emphasis on using just a thumb to interact. It also made it a point to say that the OS doesn’t involve jumping in and out of screens as much as rival platforms.

We have already seen plenty of videos of the new BlackBerry touch keyboard in action. The prediction engine is really swanky and adapts to the way you type. There is also a very cool secondary heat map layer under the keyboard that invisibly increases the click area for any letter based on how awry your aim at the letter can be.
As far as the UI is concerned RIM is heavily gesture reliant. With no hardware navigation buttons in sight, it is certainly a clean look. Thankfully there is not an ounce of boring in the UI, but it is in no way peppy or garish. It also looks well organised, with even spacing between icons, and between the lines on the default apps like Email and BBM. There is certainly something very BlackBerry about it all, but with a modern twist.

Eventually, any OS is all about apps. And BB10 brings a truckload of them. Well begun is half done. This is the largest collection of apps at launch by any OS. The app store is called BlackBerry World and it includes 70,000 BlackBerry 10 apps at launch. The new BlackBerry World will include a wide range of songs, movies and TV shows, with most movies coming to the store the day they are released on DVD, and next day availability of many TV series. The offering will feature content from all major studios, music labels and broadcast networks. BlackBerry 10 users will have access to leading apps from the likes of Disney, Cisco, Foursquare, Skype and Rovio. We will be bringing you a more in-depth look at BlackBerry World.

The company also showed off other features of the OS. BlackBerry Balance keeps your professional and personal lives separate. Users can switch between the two modes using a simple gesture. Work apps are kept segregated from your play apps. BlackBerry Messenger has also been spruced up. Now you can place voice and video calls through the app. A great new feature is the PC-like BBM Screenshare, which literally lets you share your screen while on a call. It works in virtual real time across continents.

A new app is the BlackBerry Remember, which lets you mark emails, texts, notes, photos, voice notes etc. They are all arranged in one place for you to check them. It also pulls in your notes from Evernote so you can access them in one place.

The Camera app looks pretty standard with tap to focus, but BlackBerry has introduced the Time Shift feature, which clicks several photos in burst mode and lets you go back in time to pick the image where a subject hasn’t blinked or missed the moment. The camera app has a built-in photo editor for adjusting images. Story Maker lets you build slideshows with sound, captions, photos and video right from the handset. And you can also add in neat transitions to the whole effort.

The new BlackBerry 10 browser, the company claims, sets the industry benchmark for HTML5 support on smartphones and supports multiple tabs, private browsing, a reader mode, and lets users share content easily. BlackBerry has also baked in support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync to effectively connect and manage devices as other ActiveSync devices in a company. BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 allows secure access to work email, “behind the firewall” applications and data, and benefit from other security and enterprise mobility management features.

We will have a detailed look at the new BlackBerry 10 OS in the coming days. Watch this space for more.

Temple Run 2 – iOS review

31 JANUARY 2013

WRITTEN BY vATSAL sHAH

Every so often, maybe once every three months, a mobile game comes along that consumes my life.
It’s more important than work, favorite television shows, and conversations with loved ones. I’m pulled to another universe and I can’t escape its clutches until I reach a high score that’s impossible to beat. Hours have been poured into games like “Angry Birds,” “Fruit Ninja,” and “Ski Safari,” but now a new game has joined the ranks. That game is “Temple Run 2.”

I was turned on to the original “Temple Run” late in its life. It never really grabbed me like it did so many others. It was a quick fix, but committed the cardinal sin of free mobile games: It felt like it was free.
“Temple Run 2” builds on the original formula, adding better visuals, tighter controls, a variety of environments, and RPG-esque elements that add to replay value.
You still tap the relic to begin, and the character begins a terrifying run for his or her life. A snarling beast chases you over cliffs, chasms, deadly obstacles, and now caves.
For those who haven’t played before, the runner is on a non-stop rail until something stops him or he falls off the path. Swiping to the right or left changes direction and upward makes the character jump, which comes in handy when encountering obstacles. Tilting to the right or left leans your character. This helps to collect coins, which adds to your score.
“Temple Run 2” throws in mine cart rides a la “Donkey Kong Country.” You’ll randomly encounter a cave on your run that drops you in a mine cart, controlled by tilting the device. Reaching the end of the cave will drop you back on foot.
Power ups are also new to the series. Hovering icons randomly appear that grant a shield, a speed boost, and a magnetic ability that attracts gems. Here’s where the mobile equivalent of RPG elements come into play. Coins can be spent to strengthen these power-ups, or unlock new characters with their own special abilities.
Adding to the new features that have been borrowed from other popular mobile titles, “Temple Run 2” has a list of tasks that increase your character’s level when completed. Leveling up earns you gems.
Gems can also be purchased by microtransactions and then used to resurrect your character after a death, making it possible to improve upon your score. I have some mixed feelings about this, as essentially this means you can buy a high score.
All of these new features combined with the improved “Temple Run” gameplay make for a truly addictive experience. I had to take breaks while writing this piece just so I could play it again. The fact that it’s free makes it a must play. Download “Temple Run 2” for iOS and say goodbye to your real-life surroundings for a week.

Apple iPhone 5S with 13MP camera coming in July

A KGI Securities analyst says that Apple is working on an iPhone 5 successor that will have features like snappier processor, fingerprint sensor, better camera and more powerful flash.
NEW DELHI: Apple launched iPhone 5 with much fanfare just five months ago, but reports say the company is already working on not one but two iPhones as well as next generation iPad and iPad mini.

Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst with KGI Securities, says that Apple is working on an iPhone 5 successor that will have new features like snappier processor, fingerprint sensor, better camera and more powerful LED flash. Kuo’s claim of fingerprint recognition system gains a little credence from Apple’s 2012 acquisition of Authentec, which deals with this technology.

Coming to the cheaper iPhone being developed by Apple, Kuo says this device will be same as iPhone 5 but will be a little stockier. Instead of the aluminium body and waistline of 7.6mm, the cheaper iPhone will have a plastic casing and measure 8.2mm around the sides. He also said this device will be available in six colours, a rumour that has done rounds in the past as well.

Technology blog iLounge has also reported about the upgrade in camera sensor, saying that the upcoming phone may have Sony’s 13MP unit. The report also says that the two prototypes under development are named N51 and N53.

Over the past few weeks, there have been reports of Apple facing low demand for iPhone 5. However, the company’s CEO Time Cook shot that down by saying, “The supply chain is very complex and we have multiple sources for things. Yields can vary, supplier performance can vary. There is an inordinate long list of things that can make any single data point not a great proxy for what is going on.”
